Heating and Air Conditioning

Automotive Technology credentials signify the earners' grasp of basic principles that are fundamental for automobile engines, braking systems, suspension systems, climate systems, electrical systems, and various types of transmissions. They must receive formal training and gain hands-on experience to qualify for an entry-level position through either vocational or other postsecondary training program. In addition to knowledge and skills in each automotive area, successful automotive technicians and mechanics must have excellent customer service skills and be able to listen to and communicate successfully with the vehicle owners. They must also understand and comply with the numerous state and federal laws that govern the industry including EPA laws and regulations for hazardous wastes and vehicle emissions. Specifically, this badge demonstrates the earner's ability to explain the basic principles underlying automotive heating and air-conditioning, explain how the air conditioning system works in an automobile including the purpose and function of the various components, explain the steps to take in inspecting and diagnosing heating and air-conditioning system problems, and explain the procedures in servicing heating and air-conditioning systems.
