PURPOSE
The Environmental Science credential documents the essential competencies required for a fundamental understanding of environmental science.
AUDIENCE
This credential is appropriate for individuals in an industry with a connection to environmental science. Some of the many possible career paths that would benefit from this badge include environmental engineering, environmental lobbyist, ecologist, park ranger, fisheries manager, forest engineer, science museum curator, sustainability consultant, or recycling and/or waste disposal manager.
JOB/CAREER REQUIREMENTS
The Environmental Science credentials demonstrate earners' understanding of various concepts related to ecology, climate change, population science, geology, energy, sustainability and environmental policy, mining, waste management, forests, agriculture, marine and freshwater systems. Topics include sustainability, ecology, energy, climate change, and the myriad of environmental issues impacted by human population.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE WORKPLACE TASKS:
- Collect and test samples of gases, soils, water, industrial wastewater, etc. for levels of pollutants or contaminants and record data.
- Collaborate with hazardous waste technicians, engineers, or other environmental specialists to address environmental problems.
- Assess potential environmental impact of various projects.
- Prepare, maintain, or revise quality documentation or procedures.
- Provide support for projects by collecting data, providing project documentation, training staff, etc.
- Inspect facilities and systems for conformance to federal, state, or local regulations.
- Make legislative recommendations related to environmental policy.
- Create habitat management or restoration plans.
- Perform environmental quality fieldwork.
- Monitor progress of environmental improvement programs.
- Write reports or articles for Web sites or newsletters related to environmental engineering issues
