PURPOSE
The Automotive Engine Repair credential documents the essential competencies required for automotive technicians and mechanics to repair automobile engines.
AUDIENCE
This credential is appropriate for automotive technicians and mechanics working in automotive shops, dealerships, and other areas in which gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel automobiles are serviced, inspected, diagnosed, and repaired.
JOB/CAREER REQUIREMENTS
Automotive Technology credentials signify the earners' grasp of basic principles that are fundamental for automobile engines, braking systems, suspension systems, climate systems, electrical systems, and various types of transmissions. They must receive formal training and gain hands-on experience to qualify for an entry-level position through either vocational or other post-secondary training program. In addition to knowledge and skills in each automotive area, successful automotive technicians and mechanics must have excellent customer service skills and be able to listen to and communicate successfully with the vehicle owners. They must also understand and comply with the numerous state and federal laws that govern the industry including EPA laws and regulations for hazardous wastes and vehicle emissions.

- Inspect, diagnose warning lights, and repair automotive cooling systems
- Change engine oil
- Lubricate engines
- Diagnose and repair intake and exhaust systems
- Inspect automobile engines using diagnostic testing tools
- Perform In-vehicle engine service
- Clean and detect cracks in vehicle engines
- Service vehicle engines
- Assemble and install a vehicle engine including preparing the engine for assembly and performing a trial assembly, installing engine components, testing the engine, and breaking it in
