PURPOSE
The Automotive Engine Performance Analysis credential documents the essential competencies required for automotive technicians and mechanics to analyze engine performance for a variety of engine types.
AUDIENCE
This credential is appropriate for automotive technicians and mechanics working in automotive shops, dealerships, and other areas in which gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel automobiles are serviced, inspected, diagnosed, and repaired.
JOB/CAREER REQUIREMENTS
Automotive Technology credentials signify the earners' grasp of basic principles that are fundamental for automobile engines, braking systems, suspension systems, climate systems, electrical systems, and various types of transmissions. They must receive formal training and gain hands-on experience to qualify for an entry-level position through either vocational or other post-secondary training program. In addition to knowledge and skills in each automotive area, successful automotive technicians and mechanics must have excellent customer service skills and be able to listen to and communicate successfully with the vehicle owners. They must also understand and comply with the numerous state and federal laws that govern the industry including EPA laws and regulations for hazardous wastes and vehicle emissions.
AUTOMOTIVE WORKPLACE TASKS:
- Use safety precautions when working with automotive fuels and engines
- Diagnose and service an automotive ignition system
- Use automotive onboard computers to diagnose engine problems and analyze engine performance
- Use automobile sensors to test engines as well as interpret related diagnostic codes
- Test vehicle emissions and emission control systems and interpret EVAP diagnostic trouble codes
- Diagnose EGR systems and interpret EGR-related OBD-II trouble codes
- Diagnose problems with positive crankcase ventilation and secondary-inject systems
- Diagnose problems with catalytic converters
- Use on-board and engine performance diagnostic tools
