PURPOSE
The Addiction Counselor credential documents the essential competencies for a professional involved in drug and substance abuse and addiction counseling and therapy and those working with drug and substance abusers in areas that support counseling and therapy.
AUDIENCE
This credential is appropriate for drug and substance abuse counselors and behavior disorder therapists, mental health counselors, family and marriage therapists, medical providers and nursing professionals, allied health professionals, school and community counselors, social and human services professionals, social workers, parole and probation officers, and law enforcement and other criminal justice professionals.
JOB/CAREER REQUIREMENTS
The addiction counselor works in a variety of settings including nursing and residential care facilities, community counseling centers, individual and family services providers, state and local hospitals and educational institutions, social and human services settings, and criminal justice and juvenile justice support organizations. The level of education, training, and certification varies depending upon the role and clientele.
ADDICTION COUNSELING WORKPLACE TASKS:
- Assess and evaluate client’s mental and physical health, addiction behavior, other related problem behaviors, and reaction to treatment
- Assist clients in developing and implementing treatment goals and plans
- Review and recommend treatment options with clients and their families
- Assist clients in develop skills and behaviors needed for recover
- Teach families about addiction related behaviors and disorders and strategies for coping
- Refer clients to other resources and services
- Conduct outreach programs and community education initiatives
