PURPOSE
This credential is designed to document the acquisition of basic administrative and clinical skills required for the medical assistant.
AUDIENCE
This credential is appropriate for nursing assistants or nursing aides who help provide basic care for patients in hospitals, residents of long-term care facilities, and in home care environments.
JOB/CAREER REQUIREMENTS
These credentials document development of knowledge and skills required for safe and effective care of patients and assisting of medical providers in the clinical setting as well as those skills related to front office, patient reception, and other administrative tasks.
NURSING ASSISTANT SPECIALIST WORKPLACE TASKS
Assist patients or residents in cleaning, bathing, and grooming
Assist patients or residents in toileting
Assist patients in dressing and undressing
Serve patients or residents meals and assist them with eating and drinking
Turn, reposition, and transfer patients between beds and wheelchairs
Assist patients with ambulation
Measure patient or resident’s vital signs and make notes in patient charts
Assist in maintaining a clean and safe patient or resident environment
Listen to and record patients’ health concerns and report information to nurses
Assist in obtaining specimens such as urine, stool, and sputum
Assist in bed making and ensuring patient or resident comfort
Work with a variety of patient types including infants and children, adults, geriatrics, and those with cognitive or physical impairments
