PURPOSE
The Ophthalmic Assistant credential documents the essential competencies needed to be successful in this role, which include administrative and clinical duties under the direction of the ophthalmic physician.
AUDIENCE
This credential is appropriate for an ophthalmic office assistant, ophthalmic medical secretary, ophthalmic medical receptionists, and all others who participate in the daily operations of ophthalmic office practices.
JOB/CAREER REQUIREMENTS
The Ophthalmic Medical Assistant credentials document competencies including patient care and education, ophthalmic office responsibilities, knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the eye, and lastly ophthalmic surgical assistance.
OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT WORKPLACE TASKS
Record patients’ medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records
Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, and keeping the rooms neat and clean
Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height
Educate patients on basic eye care and contact lens use
Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the ophthalmic physician
Prepare and administer medications as directed by the ophthalmic physician
Prepare and clean equipment used by ophthalmic physicians and technicians
Support ophthalmic physicians and technicians during minor surgical procedures
