PURPOSE
The Surgical Technologist Certification credential is designed to document the essential competencies needed to work in the surgical suite or operating room helping the surgical team prepare the patient and OR for the procedure, set up the sterile field and related equipment, manage the surgical instruments and supplies, and clean up the OR after the procedure using proper infection control procedures and protocol appropriate for the sterile environment.
AUDIENCE
This credential documents competencies associated with entry-level surgical technologists who are important members of the surgical team working under the supervision and authority of the surgeon within the scope of practice of state law and hospital policy.
SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST WORKPLACE TASKS:
Perform in the role of the entry-level surgical technician in the operating room and as part of the surgical team.
Use proper medical terminology based on human anatomy, physiology, and medical conditions.
Apply proper infection control procedures and practices required in patient care and in the sterile
surgical environment.
Accurately identify the surgical instruments, equipment, supplies, materials, and medications used
in general and specialized surgical procedures.
Prepare the patient for a surgical procedure, care for the patient during a surgical procedure, and
care for the patient after the surgical procedure.
Prepare the surgical environment for specific surgical procedures.
Perform surgical procedures including the role of the surgical technologist.
Apply the medical laws and ethics related to surgical procedures and the surgical technologist
position.
Effectively communicate with and apply patient care strategies for a variety of surgical patients
including those with special needs.
